Imphal is the Capital city of Manipur, where the Japanese were stopped in their tracks during their advance in the Second World War. This, combined with the protracted insurgency over a few decades has resulted in Manipur having a significance defence presence.

Situated near the town, on the Western bank of the Imphal River is the Kangla Fort / Palace. A HAL Ajeet [E2031] is preserved on display at entrance. The Ajeet features a distinctively painted rear fuselage that sports red stripes. The entrance where the aircraft is displayed is right on the National Highway 39.
